Your patience is requested as my job keeps me overseas half the month
Someone far more knowledgeable than I informs me the mark on this jar indicates it was made the the Takito Co (1880-1948) and dates back to the 1920s-'30s. There are no holes in this piece, so it was probably not designed to be used as a censor.
Representing an elephants' visage on three sides, with his upturned trunk employed as the legs, the body of this piece measures approx 4 7/8" at widest point x 4 1/2"--or 10 1/2" high when lidded. The elephants have large red ears, and ornate headdresses, and they are facing downward. One foot is imprinted with the logo "T T," as well as the words "Handpaint [sic}Made in Japan." Colors are still bright and vibrant and the inside of the bowl is in truly excellent vintage condition. The only signs of wear are to a bit of the brown paint on the underside of the bowl. Additionally, there is some moderate chipping around the inside rim of the of the topper, which is not noticeable when the lid is in place. Please see last photo.
